About SGS
What is the Sequoia Genealogical Society?
The Sequoia Genealogical Society, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Tulare County, California, and is devoted to the study and support of family history and genealogy. A major focus of that support is directed to the “Hillman Family Library of Local History and Genealogy," a.k.a. The Genealogy Room of the Tulare Public (City) Library, for which the Society provides financial support, as well as volunteers who assist patrons and help run the room.
The Genealogy Room includes the Inez Hyde Collection of genealogical materials, the Tulare Advance-Register newspaper on microfilm, some years (1892-1928) of the Visalia Delta newspaper on microfilm, obituaries for some years from the Porterville Recorder newspaper, many other resources for the research of family history and both local and California history, free access to the Library Edition of Ancestry.com, and the use of two patron computers for genealogical research.
On the first Thursday of each month, March through November, the Society holds a monthly meeting, which is open to the public. Our meetings usually include a guest speaker presenting a topic on genealogy and/or local history. Additionally, special monthly meetings may be held in January and February. We also hold an Annual Potluck Dinner at the home of the members hosting it. For more information about an upcoming meeting, please phone the Genealogy Room at (559) 685-4518.
March through November the Society also publishes a monthly newsletter, which provides information on Society events and activities, Tulare County history data, and items thought to be of genealogical interest.
